West Wyalong

West Wyalong, located in central west NSW, lies at the junction of the Newell and Mid Western Highways and is a former gold mining town. When gold was discovered in the area, the town of Wyalong was surveyed in the 1890's. However, the "main" camp for the miners was near a vital water supply, about 5km west of the gazzetted town. Despite Wyalong's official status and various public building erected in the town, the Main Camp (West Wyalong) grew faster which generated a rivalry between the two towns, of which diminished over time. The town is nowadays the centre of the local wheat, wool and pig industries as well as being an important stop for motorists due to its key highway position. The main street in West Wyalong is well looked after, contains a large variety of shops and gives a time warp feeling about it due the nature of the buildings and curvy streets.
