Wyong

Wyong, a large town located on the NSW Central Coast, lies on the Pacific Highway (just off the Sydney-Newcastle Freeeway) between Gosford and Newcastle and along the Wyong River. Established in 1825 after land grants were issued in the area, the town grew slowly around the local timber industry, although soon after became a popular stopping point for traffic travelling between Sydney and Maitland. Growth occurred once the railway to Newcastle was completed in the late 1880's and Wyong became a centre for dairying, citrus growing and timber industries. Although the nearby Tuggerah Lake and Lake Budgewoi became popular tourist and retirement destinations from the 1960's, Wyong has remained the commercial and administrative centre for the region. Of interest in the area include Tuggerah Lake (7km east), Forest of Tranquility (popular rainforest attraction - 14km south) and the historic Alison Homestead (6km west).
