Biloela

Biloela is a busy town set in the heart of the Callide Valley in central QLD. The town was originally a centre for the surrounding agricultural district but more recently other industries such as coal mining, meatworks, a power station, wheat and sunflower farming have added to Biloela's economic base and thus population. Initial settlement took place in the 1850's with many large sheep runs in existance - the town grew further with the extension of the railway line in 1924 and is named from the Aboriginal origin meaning "cockatoo". The town itself is well looked after, has a recently upgraded shopping precicnt (including new shopping centre) and a couple of nice parks abutting the railway station and Callide Street. Of interest in the area are the Callide Dam (5km north), the Callide Mine and Power Station (tours operating several days a week) and The Silo (recommended).
