Bundaberg is located at the eastern end of the Isis Highway on the banks of the Burnett River. The stunning city is the southernmost access point to the Great Barrier Reef, has many tropical parks, wide streets and several colonial style buildings. The town of Bundaberg was founded in 1881 and prospered as a port for sugar mills and the rum distillery. The city now is still one of the state's leading sugar cane farming centres, and is the country's largest producer of brown rum and tomatoes. The CBD has many lovely original buildings still standing, many specialty shops and several interesting parks abutting the Burnett River. Being only a handful of kilometres from the nearby coastal towns of Elliott Heads, Burnett Heads & Bargara which offer safe swimming beaches, the city is set in an ideal position.
