Calliope

Calliope is located at the junction of the Bruce and Dawson Highways, 20km west of Gladstone and on the eastern edge of the Calliope Valley. The town has had some growth since the 1960's due to the nearby Gladstone industries, and as a result a "northern" and "southern" township has evolved although the primary industry for Calliope still remains beef farming. The town was surveyed in the 1860's as part of the gold rush era - the town's first name was Nuggety's Gully with the change occurring once the nearby Calliope River was named.
