Caloundra, the southern most and largest centre on the Sunshine Coast, lies at the northern end of Pumicestone Passage/Bribie Island and 13km east of the Bruce Highway. Originally a small fishing port, Caloundra's growth mainly occurred post war when it became a well known tourist destination due to the collection of popular beaches (Kings, Shelly, Dicky & Golden) and for the safe boating haven of Pumicestone Channel. With a mix of developments on the foreshore & headland and rapid expansion to the south-west, Caloundra's recent growth is also strong - it has a bustling, shady city centre, excellent facilities for tourists with a wide range of accommodation. Of interest in the area are the Glasshouse Mountains (30km south-west) which are prominent on the western skyline, the shipwreck of SS Dicky on Dicky Beach (4km north), Aussie World/Ettamogah Pub (15km west) & Caloundra Head which offers a variety of lookouts and vantage points.
