Cloncurry

Cloncurry, situated in north-west Queensland is a remote town located at the Landsborough, Barkly and Flinders Highways, and on the eastern side of the Cloncurry River. Settled in 1867 from the discovery of copper in the area, the town soon supported pastoral industries. Initially the ore was transported north to Normanton however the arrival of the railway line in 1907 allowed a more direct connection with the east coast and promoted further growth. The town is well known for its role in establishing the first Royal Flying Doctor's service and was the destination for the first Qantas flight from Charleville. Despite Cloncurry being famous for its extreme summer temperatures, the town remains prosperous from current mining activity and its key geographical position.
