Giru, located just off the Bruce Highway between Townsville and Ayr and along the Haughton River lies in essentially flat countryside dominated by sugar cane fields. The town was originally a railway siding on the North Coast Railway but has grown to be a service centre for the surrounding sugar industry with the sugar mill in town being one of the largest in the Southern hemisphere, of which dominates the skyline. Also of interest in the area is the Bowling Green Bay National Park - the mountains to the north of the town provide an interesting backdrop.
