Gregory Highway   was & (includes Gregory Developmental Road)

The Gregory Highway is a north-south highway that links several towns in the central highlands region of Queensland and forms part of the inland route connecting Townsville & Mackay with New South Wales. Starting at the Dawson Highway at Springsure, the Gregory Highway heads north, through fairly dry, cattle districts to reach the Capricorn Highway and main centre of Emerald. From Emerald, the Gregory highway continues north, passing through rich grain, cattle farming regions and nearby to several large coalmines, through the small town of Capella before reaching Clermont. The highway continues north for 10km where it intersects with the Peak Downs Highway, marking the start of the Gregory Developmental Road, which continues through vast, remote cattle farming districts to reach the Belyando Crossing roadhouse and eventually the Flinders Highway, just south-west of Charters Towers. Joining the Flinders Highway for 7km, the Gregory Developmental Road continues north-west, again through remote cattle farming districts and generally through outback Queensland, passing by the small town of Greenvale before reaching the Kennedy Developmental Road at The Lynd Junction. Motorists continuing north towards Atherton and Cairns are now to follow the Kennedy Developmental Road.

Note: Due to recent route numbering changes to the A7 (as above), motorists may need to follow National Route 55 from Springsure through to Charters Towers as many maps and signposting may not reflect the changes. North of Charters Towers, where the A7 is not signposted, motorists are to follow State Route 63.

State: Queensland
Name Origin:
The Gregory Highway was named after explorer/surveyor Augustus Gregory who's journeys covered inland Queensland, Northern Territory and South Australia. The highway/developmental road's position approximates a section of Gregory's 1855 exploration from Brisbane to Darwin.
Start:
Dawson Highway (Springsure)
Principal Towns: Springsure, Emerald, Capella, Clermont *, Charters Towers, Greenvale
Finish: Kennedy Developmental Road (The Lynd Junction)
Length: 790km
Road Standard: Bitumen
Road Quality: Generally good south of Charters Towers. North of Charters Towers the road occasionally is single lane bitumen only.  Little to no overtaking lanes for its entire length. Road passes through mildly undulating terrain with traffic levels higher around Emerald and Charters Towers. Otherwise, traffic levels are quite low with many long straight sections of road to navigate. Motorists are to be warned the journey from Clermont to Charters Towers and north of Charters Towers passes through some remote, outback Queensland countryside where services and mobile coverage are minimal.
Speed Limit (outside built up areas): 100km/hr
