Hughenden, situated on the banks of the Flinders River, is a key centre on the Flinders Highway between Townsville and Mt Isa and lies on the western slopes of the Great Dividing Range. Settled in 1863, the town formed to service the growing cattle & sheep industries and is also an important railhead. The town forms part of Australia's Dinosaur Trail along with Richmond and Winton - various dinosaur sculptures in the town's streets signify the level of interest that accompanies with the discovery of fossils in the area. The town is also an important stop for motorists travelling the Flinders Highway due to its remote position and services available. Of interest in the area is the Porcupine Gorge National Park (63km north) which features a mini "grand canyon".
