Ipswich is a large settlement located 40km south-west of Brisbane, just off the Warrego & Cunningham Highways and set on the banks of the Bremer River. Ipswich was surveyed in 1827 and was established as a convict station for mining limestone. With the introduction of free settlers in 1842 and the demise of the convict settlement, Ipswich became a busy port on the Bremer River due to the nearby coal mines. The mines are still operational today as they supply one of Queensland's largest power stations. The city is almost now a part of Brisbane's metropolitan area due to the rapid growth undergone in South East QLD in the last 10 years. Despite this, Ipswich remains independent of Brisbane with a large commercial centre that not only provides for the city itself but for the regional areas to the south and west.
