Julia Creek, situated on the Flinders Highway between Townsville and Mt Isa, is known as the gateway to the gulf country. Settled in the 1860's the town was established as a centre for the surrounding pastoral industries. The flat, downs country that is prominent in the area was traditionally for sheep and cattle grazing but in recent times has supported mining after the discovery of silver, zinc and lead deposits. As the town is relatively remote, it has become an important stop for motorists. Of interest in the area includes the unusually shaped water tower in town, the Punch Bowl waterhole & picnic area (40km north east) and the Walkabout Creek Hotel at McKinlay which was made famous from the Crocodile Dundee films (75km south west).
