Maleny, located at the summit of the Blackall Ranges, west of Caloundra in the Sunshine Coast hinterland is also a popular tourist destination known for its range of quaint art, craft, potteries and gift shops. The town was established in the late 1800's as a settlement to serve the surrounding dairying countryside but in recent times such land has been increasingly sold for rural-residential subdivisions attracting many people seeking alternative lifestyles. The town up until 2004 was the centre of the Woolworths furor with many of the alternative townsfolk (some with too much time) attempting to block the supermarket giant from expanding into Maleny, ended in a mini riot with police having to eventually escort the construction. Of interest in the area are McCarthys and Howells Knob lookouts offering superb vantage points over the Sunshine Coast and hinterland, Mary Cairncross Park (7km south-east) and the scenic drive north through Montville and Mapleton to connect with Nambour.
