Maryborough

Maryborough, one of Queensland's oldest cities, lies on the banks of the Mary River and is one of the major centres in the Fraser Coast region. The city was first settled in 1847 and in its heyday was a major port of entry for many vessels to the east coast. Today the city's industries are essentially train construction (QLD Tilt trains) and sugar cane. Maryborough has been promoted as a heritage city with many of its original commercial and Queenslander style buildings preserved, in particular along Wharf Street where the street has been re-formed to create an historic atmosphere. The city centre is very appealing - retains a busy feel and with a recent upgrade is quite vegetated and colourful. Nearby Queens Park is a spectacular garden which also offers great views of the Mary River.
