Middleton, located on the Kennedy Developmental Road between Winton and Boulia consists of a solitary hotel that also sells some supplies and a small range of fuel. The area was first discovered by John McKinlay's expedition in 1861 and despite initially being a staging post for coaches has not grown to any degree of importance due to the relatively inhospitable environment it resides in. Nevertheless, the hotel itself is well worth stopping for, as are the other exhibits that demonstrate a level of humour from the locals. Also of interest in the area is Cawnpore Lookout (20km west) which offers remarkable views over the unusual landforms.
