Mount Morgan, located about 35km south-west of Rockhampton on the Burnett Highway, lies just beyond the top of the Great Dividing Range escarpment. The town was explored in the mid 1850's by the Morgan Brothers - of which setup a cattle station, but in the early 1880's established a mining company due to the large quantities of copper and gold in the region. The mine grew and at one stage supported about 10,000 people however operations eventually dwindled and now the town serves as a centre for the local beef industry as well as being an unusual satellite town to Rockhampton. The remains of the old mine can still be explored (tours run daily) with the open cut section now filled with water to form a large (and very deep) lake.
