Roma, located at the intersection of the Warrego and Carnarvon Highways, is the largest town in south-western QLD and the Maranoa District. The town was surveyed in 1862 to serve the growing local agricultural industries. By the early 1900's oil and gas was discovered west of Roma which sprouted quick growth in the town. Today the town serves as the centre of the local beef and cotton industries as well as being the commercial centre of south-western QLD. Certainly a pleasant, albeit very flat town to visit with a colourful and busy town centre. Of interest in the region are the Big Rig at the information centre at the eastern entrance to town, Meadowbank Old Australiana Museum, Mt Abundance and the Carnavon National Park (200km north).
