Texas

Texas, located in Queensland's southern downs, lies just north of the NSW/QLD border and the Dumaresq River. First settled in the 1840's, the town originally grew around the local tobacco plantations and factory - however the floods of 1890 destroyed the township and its location was moved 2km north to its present site. Although the tobacco industries dwindled in the 1950's, the town nowadays is an important beef and sheep farming centre that provides not only for the surrounding area but also for a significant portion of the Inverell Shire (New South Wales). Of interest in the area are Lake Glenlyon (35km east), popular for fishing & water sports and the Sundown National Park (50km east).
