Crystal Brook

Crystal Brook, a moderate sized town located at the southern most edge of the Flinders Ranges, was proclaimed in the late 1870's and is a centre for the local grain and wool industries. The town, while still a stopping point for the Indian Pacific and Ghan railways, was once bustling with traffic until the bypass of Highway 1 was built in the early 1990's, thus the town has become quieter. In recent times the main street has been redeveloped and is now a tree lined avenue sporting various historic buildings (including the Bakehouse Museum) and shops. Bowman Park to the east is a popular recreation area featuring a fauna park, picnic areas and the ruins of the original Bowman homestead.
