Tintinara, a small town located on the Dukes Highway between Tailem Bend and Keith, lies at the southernmost part of the Murray Mallee region, known for its dry, flat pastures that support extensive wheat and wool industries. The area was first settled in the 1850's as a watering hole to service the traffic heading from Adelaide to the Victorian goldfields, however it wasn't until 1906 that a town was established. Centred around the existing railway siding, the town eventually evolved into a small service centre once the surrounding farmland was opened up after trace elements were added to the originally unforgiving soil. Although the town takes an unusual form where all the commercial activity lies along a service road to the Dukes Highway, the towering wheat silos adjacent to the railway station are a common feature in many of the towns in the area.
