Bairnsdale

Bairnsdale lies adjacent to the Mitchell River, on the Princes Highway and is the largest and commercial centre for the eastern Gippsland. The area boasts rich farming land which support the local wool, cattle and dairy industries and is promoted as the Victorian riverina as winter temperatures are generally warmer than Melbourne. The town was settled in the 1840's however strong growth occurred in the 1850's and 60's as it became an important port for the Omeo goldfields. The town's main street is absolutely superb - encompasses a wide median strip containing beautiful gardens, monuments with several historic buildings that line the street. To the south is Lake King, Paynesville and to the east Lakes Entrance, of which all are popular tourist destinations.
