Benalla

Benalla is a large town located just off the Hume Fwy between Melbourne and Wangaratta. The town was first surveyed in 1848, but growth was slow until the goldfields rush. Benalla had many associations with the Kelly gang and the courthouse was the venue for a number of their trials. The town itself is excellent - the main street is tree lined and surrounds a busy and colourful shopping precinct; Benalla Gardens (0.5km west) features various walks along the beautiful Benalla Lake and an award winning rose garden. The town is also a good base to explore the Victorian alps with both Mt Buller and Mt Buffalo in close proximity.
