Geelong

Geelong, being Victoria's second largest city is a deepwater port and industrial centre on the shores of Corio Bay, a part of Port Phillip Bay. It is a pleasant, well planned city with many parks along the coast near the CBD and adjacent to Barwon River. The town begun in 1837 and grew quickly as a port from wool exports. More riches came to the town during the goldrush years in the 1850's. At that time Geelong rivaled Melbourne in a contest to who would become the capital city of Victoria.
The city centre has many fine heritage listed buildings, an attractive pedestrian mall, Johnstone Park and the Memorial Art Gallery. A short drive away is the city lookout (9km north-west), historic Queenscliff on the Bellarine Peninsula and the surf beaches of Torquay, 35km south.
