Merbein

Merbein, located on the Calder Highway in the state's northern Sunraysia region, is surrounded by vast citrus and vineyard plantations and set against the Murray River. The town was settled, similarly to Mildura, after extensive irrigation allowed the surrounding countryside to be properly farmed in the late 1800's and was originally named White Cliffs due to the distinctive colour on the cliffs along the Murray River. Acting as a satellite town to Mildura, Merbein essentially provides for the local community but retains a much quieter nature due to the limited services on offer for the tourist.
