Portland

Portland holds the only deepwater port between Adelaide and Melbourne, is Victoria's first permanent settlement and located at the southern end of the Henty Highway where it meets the Southern Ocean. The town originally relied on fishing and whaling for its industy but in the 1980's an aluminium smelter was constructed. In town are several heritage buildings dating back to 1840, the town's Botanic Gardens (also dating to 1840!) - in the area are Cape Bridgewater, Cape Nelson State Park and petrified forest to the south and various safe swimming beaches along the coast as it curves to the east.
