Wangaratta is one of the larger towns in Victoria's north-east. It is located along the Old Hume Highway, is at the start of the Great Alpine Road and set against the Ovens River. The area around Wangaratta was first discovered by Hume and Hovell in the 1820's and the township was surveyed in 1837 when the surrounding area was open for farming. The city today is the centre of a prosperous beef, wool, crops and wine growing district which becomes particularly busy during the winter months as it also caters for the nearby ski fields. In the city is Merriwa Park, a sunken garden adjacent to King River, Airworld at Wangaratta Airport and the city is a good base to explore the old goldfield areas of Beechworth & Yackandandah.
