Warrnambool

Warrnambool is the largest city in south-western Victoria, lies on the Princes Highway near the western end of  the scenic Great Ocean Road and at the mouth of the Hopkins River. The city was first settled in the 1840's when squatters camped on the Hopkins River. Warrnambool became an important port, shipping wool, dairy products and wheat, however the port silted up in the 1920's and it ceased operation. Today, Warrnambool is a coastal resort hosting safe beaches and several attractions including Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum & Lookout, Lake Pertobe, Warrnambool Art Gallery & Botanic Gardens. The city centre is marvellous - set in a small valley, offers a large amount of shops, restaurants and several historic buildings dating back to the late 1800's. The Princes Highway through the city is also quite unique as it has several kilometres of matured Norfolk Pines in the median strip.
