In 1979 when the Commonwealth Government approached community organisations for assistance to meet emergency accommodation needs for people in crisis the Nambour Lions Club responded and received a grant to begin providing accommodation in the region. They began with one house. As the need grew the service increased its capacity to help. This in turn led to a cry for assistance from other Clubs. They rallied to support the centre and it became an official District 201Q3 Project in 1983. Since 1992 the Centre has enjoyed and been grateful for additional support from District 201Q4. With increasing family breakdown, decreased availability of affordable housing, rising unemployment, escalation of domestic violence and general multiplying of stresses on families, the demands on the centre have grown. The centre is subsidised by the State and Commonwealth Governments, under the Supported Accomodation Assistance Program. (SAAP) This support from districts 201Q3 and 201Q4 enables the centre to provide an effective service in a friendly, family-type atmosphere. |
