HONORS AND AWARDS
Operation Hobart
Private Winterford of 7 Platoon C Coy was awarded the Military Medal for gallantry for his
actions on Operation Hobart.
In the words of the citation:
Whilst obviously in great pain and suffering loss of blood, and though still under
enemy fire, he conducted himself in such a courageous manner as to set an example and
inspire those fighting with him. This display of profesional skill and of his personal courage
throughout the action was in the highest tradition of service, and reflect great credit upon
himself, his Regiment and the Australian Army.
Cpl R Rutherford of 6 Platoon B Coy was also awarded the Military Medal for his actions. In
the words of his citation:
On his own initiative he immediately took over as Platoon Sergeant when his Sergeant was
wounded. During the close and very heavy fire fight and mortaring he moved with complete
disregard for his own safety around the weapon pits tending to the casualities and the
administration of the Platoon. He took on the task of redistributing ammunition to those
positions where ammunition was running low and exposed himself to enemy fire whilst doing
so.
Cpl Rutherford actions were outstanding and he took far greater risks with his life than his
duties as a section commander required. His inspiration to all present by his actions deserved
permanent recognition.
Captain K P Murphy from 161 Field Battery NZ was awarded mention in despatches for his
efforts in directing artillery fire after being wounded.
