"THE MINEFIELD"
Vietnam Veterans know exactly
which minefield is referred to when "the minefield" is
mentioned. It is the one that was laid by the Australian Task Force
from the Horseshoe to the coast.
It is the one from which the Viet Cong stole thousands of mines,
replanting them to cause many, many Australian casualties.
And those M16 mines were deadly, jumping a metre into the air before
exploding and sending shrapnel in all directions.
The main part of that story is the vexed question of the decision.
Given the disastrous impact of the minefield, how was the decision
made. What, if anything, went wrong in the decision making process.
But the importance of understanding the (decisions is not to diminish
the fascinating stories of the minefield's)
laying and its lifting. and the sad story of the Australian casualties
it caused.
