Reading
Locating a point on a Military map using grid coordinates, otherwise
known as grid references (GR)
The lines on these Military maps form squares 1,000 by 1,000 metres.
The numbers on the lines increase from left to right, (Eastings)
and bottom to top, (Northings)
Grid references are always preceded by two letters that indicate the
area of the country shown in a series of maps. In the case of Phuoc Tuy
Province, they are YS.
Where grid line numbers are written 1150, for example, ignore the
smaller font numbers, in this case, 11.
The precision of a location is shown by the number of digits in the
grid reference, the more numbers, the more precise the
location….5002 (50 Easting 02 Northing) indicates a 1,000
metre grid square, not very precise.
Using imaginary lines that divide the large grid square into smaller
100 and 10 metre squares, 505025 indicates the centre of the square to
the nearest 100 metres. Additional numbers eg 50550255 indicate an area
close to the centre of the square to the nearest 10 metres.
On the map below, the grid reference 4902 indicates a grid square that
contains a village.
495022 indicates the centre of the village while 491025 indicates its
north-west corner…to the nearest 100 metres.
A more precise grid reference for the north-west corner might be
49150250 while the south-east corner is at 49850200….to the
nearest 10 metres.
Now find the very small village or group of buildings near a river
at
500047.
Now did you get it right?????
