About the Inverell Branch

The Ulysses Club Inc. which the Inverell Branch, the "Sapphire Country Cruisers" is part of, is one of the largest organisations of it's kind in Australia and was formed with five initial members in a Sydney pub in 1983. Over the last twenty odd years it has become a large and very well-respected, social motorcycle club for older motorcycle riders and pillion passengers that are 40 years old and over, and is complemented with Australian and International membership currently exceeding 25,000 members (as of 2008) and new membership is increasing every year. The Ulysses Club Inc. and it's branches offer a casual, warm and friendly, "bad attitude" free, non-motorcycle brand and size specific atmosphere when we assemble to meet for our rides. We don't care if you ride a Harley Davidson motorcycle, Luxury Japanese or European-made Tourer, Trike, Cruiser, Sports or Performance bike, or even if you ride a scooter, as long as you enjoy being amongst people of a similar, mature age and "ilk", have a social interest in motorcycles, riding and the lifestyle, enjoy a relaxing ride touring to and from visiting many various and different destinations and you'd like to learn how to "Growing Old Disgracefully", then this is the motorcycle club for you.

The Inverell Branch currently has a membership of some 30 odd "Ulyssians', that include local farmers and rural property owners, local town business owners, tradespersons, professionals, and retirees. We have two (2) ride days a month, and they are normally held on the first and third sundays of the calendar month with branch members normally assembling in front of the Inverell "McDonald's" Family Restaurant, located our main street, Byron Street, from around 9:00am - 9:30am, depending on the time of year and the days destination. Monthly ride destinations and times are listed in the "Monthly Ride Days and Event Calendar" within the "Branch Newsletter" and should be freely available to view (or ask Andrew or "Spanner") at the front sales counter of "New England Toyota and Motorcycles", just a across the road from our meeting spot in front of "McDonald's".

Membership to the Inverell Branch is free to join, but we would like you to be a current, financial member of the Ulysses Club Inc. or be an age eligible rider, that is keen in joining the club in the near future. You must also be currently licenced to ride a motorcycle, and your motorcycle must be in a legal roadworthy condition and be currently registered. Any age eligible riders or age eligible friends of current branch members, that are interested or thinking about becoming members the Ulysses Club Inc. are always welcome to accompany the branch on any of our ride days, as our invited guest(s). This function is primarily for interested riders to chat to members of the Ulysses Club Inc., to get the "feel" of the Inverell branch and it's members, and after a suitable time riding with us, if hopefully you are still interested, club membership forms can be obtained from any one of our branch committee members.

The Inverell Branch is involved in two main, local motorcycling events during the course of the year. The Branch and it's membership are normally, cordially invited to provide route marshalls for the local "Inverell Motorcycles Restorers Club Rally", annually held towards the end of the summer riding season, and the Annual Salvation Army "Toy Run" Charity Ride, where numerous local motorcycle clubs and motorcycle businesses band together for a worthy cause, to assist the "Salvation Army" in raising cash and collecting donations of food, toys and other necessities of life, from the general public to assist the "Salvo's" in supporting local families in need during the end of year, christian, festive season.

Our "Executive" Branch Committee consists of the "Branch President", "Branch Secretary" and the new position of "Branch Welcoming / Member Retention Officer". The "Branch Welcoming / Member Retention Officer" committee member's duties are two fold, they are the "first contact" person for any new members joining the Ulysses Club Inc. or the Inverell Branch, and as the name implies, to actively attempt to retain current branch membership and to seek out and encourage past or lapsed members in re-newing their financial membership to the Ulysses Club Inc.

There are also two other equally important members of the branch committee, and they are the "Ride Coordinator's". The "Ride Coordinator's" are normally known as the "Ride Leader" or "Road Captain" and they are the contact person for their particular nominated day, in case of inclement weather conditions. They are also supposed to be responsible for writing the "Ride Report" for that particular ride day, for publication in the monthly "Branch Newsletter", but that particular role is on a voluntary basis and it is not actively enforced. All of these committee members are voted into office by an initial two member nomination and then a vote of their peers into the positions, during our annual general meeting, normally held on the third sunday in January of each year. As a member of the Inverell Branch, you will automatically receive the monthly email "Branch Newsletter", it is freely issued to all listed branch members, VIA EMAIL ONLY, around the end of the calendar month, (usually emailed the fourth weekend, after the last monthly ride day) hopefully with ride reports of the previous months ride days, any Ulysses Club NatCom and internal branch notices, and various items of general motorcycling interest, plus a copy of the current "Monthly Ride Days and Event Calendar" (ride day destinations can be periodically changed, cancelled or updated, depending on recent climatic conditions or branch member interest, so it's prudent to keep and eye on it).

For any further enquiries about the Ulysses Club Inc., or joining the Inverell Branch, please contact the "Branch Welcoming / Member Retention Officer" or "Branch Secretary" as listed below, or if you are enquiring about the Inverell Branch's membership or ride days, events or destinations, please email the website admin at ;

Monthly Branch Ride Day Report

IMZ - Ural Sidecar (Outfit) Australian Launch

at 2:00pm, Saturday, 14th June 2008

Held at the New England Girls School (N.E.G.S) Multi-Purpose Centre, Armidale, New South Wales.

The Inverell Branch President, Phil Kimber received an invitation to the launch of the IMZ- Ural Sidecar (Outfit) Launch at Armidale, and asked if other branch members would like to accompany him, so Daren Mather and I accompanied Phil as he drove to Armidale, due to the persistent cold weather.

We arrived in Armidale, grabbed some lunch in one of the local pub's and then made our way to the N.E.G.S for the launch. On arrival at N.E.G.S, we were greeted with the presence of many motorcyclists and some Ulysses Club members from the Glen Innes Branch. We were then ushered into the "Multi-Purpose Centre" where we were given nametags and had our names marked off the invitation roll. Upon entering the main auditorium, we saw many people gathered around two coloured versions of the "Tourist" model, one in black and one in red, which we all had a very close inspection of and playing on a screen on a wall, were videos of the outfits being put through their reliability trials in various countries, environments and terrains.

Once all the invited people were present, our attention was drawn to the main event, the official launch of the outfits themselves onto the Australian motorcycling public. The launch was officially opened by the Managing Director of Ural Australia, John Taylor, then a short speech from Artyom Kozhin, the First Secretary to the Russian Ambassador to Australia, Alexander Blokin, who gave a short speech on the history of the IMZ-Ural manufacturing company and the motorcycle and sidecar outfits, then we were presented with a short video address from Madina Merzhoyeva of Irbit Motorcycles of America who wished the company well in it's future endeavours, then another short speech from "J.D", the president of the Russian Motorcycle Owners Association. Well respected motor racing commentator, Will Hagan then gave a rather long winded speech and finally, officially unveiled a "woodland' camouflaged version of the sidecar outfit, the "Gear Up 1WD".

The assembled members of the invited public were then invited to continue to inspect the three outfits, purchase various items from the merchandising stand and help themselves to the provided afternoon tea.

After having some of the sumptuous cakes, smoked salmon and red and black caviar encrusted "hors d'ouvres" from the afternoon tea tables, Phil, Daren and I decided to return to Inverell.

Round trip distance : 251kms

Pip's Travels

Last updated, 6:00pm, Sunday, 8th June 2008

Hi all,

I'm in Cairns at the moment and doing tours from here, Port Douglas, The Daintree and Cape Tribulation on Wednesday, the Waterfalls (Milla Milla, etc), the Dairy, Ravenshoe Windfarm and the Fig Curtain today, all kindly organized by a local member here. Having a ball, it's very humid and hot here, so different from winter down home, wish you were all here.

Went to the ext-NatCom meeting while in Townsville, and also rode in the parade this year. The A.G.M was tops, met heaps of folks and I am still meeting them on my trip.

I have been invited to visit people in Geraldton and in South Australia.

Stay safe, my mates, see you all in October, or maybe in September at the Ghost Town Rally in Broken Hill (EDIT: see the "Upcoming Rallies, Events and Shows" section below).

Luv Pip.

Petition against the introduction of front number plates for motorcycles

The Victorian Government have recently released a Regulatory Impact Statement (RIS) advocating the introduction of front number plates for all motorcycles. This draconian measure has absolutely no safety benefits for motorcyclists and is a cover up for the fact that the Government ordered the wrong front facing speed cameras in the first place.

Description / History :

The issue of front ID/front number plates for motorcycles has been on the government's agenda for years.

Recently the Motorcycle Riders Association of Australia had published a article outlining VicRoads attempted to pass legislation on the issue.

Not only is this just a problem for Victorians, but for all Australian motorcyclists, as this could be just the beginning of a nation-wide introduction of "Front ID's".

This excerpt was taken from the article posted on mraa.org.au (23rd Jan 2008).

"The Victorian Police (almost uniquely of all the World's Police Forces) seem to be unable to use well tested cameras to photograph the rear of motorcycles and scooters. In an effort to stigmatise motorcyclists still further for their own operational shortfalls, they are now once again pressing for front number plates for all motorcycles, despite the fact that internationally the only countries that require this are that paragon of road safety & India, and that defender of personal freedoms & Singapore.

The Motorcycle Riders Association may be forced to re-visit its Front Number Plate campaign if a draft Regulatory Impact Statement (RIS), dated December 2007 and issued by Vic Roads without consultation with the Victorian Motorcycle Advisory Council, currently doing State government rounds with a view to introducing front identification decals commencing 2009 goes ahead.

The RIS is circulating amongst other Australian government agencies and is scheduled for sign off at an Australian Transport Council meeting, attended by all State and Federal Transport ministers, sometime this year to meet the proposed 2009 introduction.

Users to Pay Motorcycle riders will be forced to pay up to $200 for every motorcycle they own as part of the retrofit/installation requirements associated with the introduction of the Frontal Identification. This even includes vintage machines only used on the road under Club permit limitations. Added to the costs are safety and aesthetic considerations for those motorcycles that will need brackets affixed to the front or holes drilled to hold the proposed decals.

The timing of this RIS with CRIMTRAKS recent announcement of the planned use of hundreds of nation wide ANPR cameras suggests that this RIS may not be about safety at all, but rather about real time surveillance and data base building of the movements of the entire driving population. Otherwise why this almost uniquely Australian need to rely on frontal detection?

The MRAA has argued in the past that the $22 million cost of introducing Frontal Identification is wasteful for the net recovery of about $300,000 in extra speeding fines. According to MRA Vice-President John Karmouche, one of a group of past leaders/organizers of a campaign to stop the introduction of Frontal ID in 2003, "Riders are already paying a $50 safety levy (EDIT: in Victoria), and there is a lot of good work being done in other areas that negates the effect of going down this path. The RIS is based on injury/fatality data pre 2005. Since 2005 fatalities/injuries have come down and per-capita this reduction has been magnified by the fact that the number of motorcycles and scooters on Australia's roads has more than doubled since 2005.".

The MRA has contacted internationally recognised transport expert Professor Marcus Wigan, author of the initial reports on which the FNP program at VicRoads was based. Dr Wigan has agreed to comment on the current Draft RIS in the interests of properly informed public debate.

Professor Wigan is Emeritus Professor of Computing and Transport Systems at Napier University, Edinburgh, and Professorial Fellow, Civil and Environmental Engineering, at the University of Melbourne. He is also the convenor for Data and Surveillance for the Australian Privacy Foundation.".

Ulysses NSW Greenslips (CTP)

Inverell Branch Member Testimonial

Dated : 5th April 2008

Mick,

I was reading in the latest "Riding On" about green slips, spoke to Phil on the ride on sunday about same he said he saved about 10% with Monaland Pty Ltd at http://www.monavale.com.au.

I have just recieved my renewal from NRMA, so I contacted Monaland (Kevin was very helpful, every thing done in under 30 min) & saved $59.10 (NRMA was $324.10, Monaland was $265.00).

Maybe you could let other members know about the possible savings. I have been informed that they will soon be able offer different types of insurance in the near future.

Regards,

A copy of an email transcript was earlier sent to the branch president, Phil Kimber from Deb Monaghan of Monaland Pty Ltd on the current business situation of the Ulysses Club Inc. Discounted, New South Wales Vehicle Registration Compulsory Third Party Insurance Certificates (CTP's or "Greenslips") .

We would just like to update you on some changes which will update you on the Ulysses NSW Greenslips (CTP) which has proven to be a HUGE benefit to many members.

We launched this benefit at the Sydney Bike Show 2007 and since then have had a great response. 85% of members, who obtain quotes, accept the policies based on price. Unfortunately I can not beat every price in all circumstances but am working towards it.

Just before Christmas I was unfortunately made redundant from my place of employment. My biggest concern at that time was keeping Ulysses Greenslips alive. The Insurer has been a great support and we managed to keep it going but I needed a permanent solution urgently.

Monaland Pty Ltd has been created so we fulfill the Insurer requirements as they can only (officially) deal with a registered company. My partner, Kevin and I will continue to provide the Greenslips as a part time business which means after work hours. Feel free to contact us after 5.30pm or weekends or by email to obtain a quotation or accept a policy. The RTA is electronically notified within 30 minutes and we will email/send the receipt to you. If you have an urgent request and you can not wait until after 5.30, our mobile number is also listed and we can arrange the policy throughout the day but please - only in urgent circumstances.

For all the members asking about Comprehensive Bike Insurance, I am still discussing this with an Insurer and when the product is ready, we will let you all know.

As a thank you for the support, CIC Allianz and Monaland Pty Ltd is giving away 5 Greenslips at the 2008 Townsville A.G.M but you will need to register before 23/05/2008. You can register now even though your bike registration is not due yet. We will send you the quote 1 month before it is due.

You will need to provide:

Name

Address (including postcode)

Registration Number

Due Date

Engine size of the bike

Year, make and model

Email address

Phone Number

All this information is on our website at http://www.monaland.com.au

We wish you all the very best for 2008.

Cheers,

Deb Monaghan.
