The Australian School of Needlework offer courses in Australia for students interested in learning the art of Needlework.
Embroidery is the expression of symbolism and status. It is a traditional skill and passion, extending back over the centuries. The continued study and teaching of these skills will help to protect them for our future, thus preventing this art from being lost. Students can choose to work for pleasure or for qualifications. We are negotiating for our qualifications to be recognised in Tertiary colleges, universities and in the work force.
ASN's main founder is Helen Freeman-Haberland, BFA (UTAS) RSN (UK). Helen has completed a One Year Certificated Course at the Royal School of Needlework in Hampton Court, Surrey. She is also a member of the Australian Embroiderers' Guild, Launceston, and a member of the Embroiderers Guild of America and CyberStitchers. We receive life subscriptions to Needle Arts America as well as the European Textile Network magazine.
The school has developed an extensive library with sound references to the history of textiles, conservation & restoration of textiles, as well as traditional technical embroidery skills. It also includes contemporary textile art information, quality magazines and much more. Since this is a private reference library, borrowing is strictly limited. Please enquire for details.
The ASN specialises in the creation of its own designs, which are very popular in the classroom.
Our tutors are highly experienced in passing on their knowledge. If you are interested in assisting with our teaching program, please contact us for more information.
The are examples of completed work in our Gallery. Please contact us if you would like your work to be on display.
