England 5th-19th Sep 2010 Itinerary
Helen Haberland BFA UTAS & CC RSN UK, with full support & encouragement of Franklin House, National Trust TAS are delighted to offer in 2010 two, 2-week annual embroidery tours in England & France. These events connect traditional and contemporary embroidery with antiques, art, gardens, history and intercontinental lifestyles.
Participants are welcome to join either tour, or a discount for both.
We have done everything possible to ensure the itinerary stays on schedule; any changes will be dealt with to ensure the utmost convenience to participants.
Day 1 Sunday – Sep 5th 2010
For those of us travelling together we aim to convene at a pre-determined time – where we can be collected and transported to 22 Lansdowne Road, Royal Tunbridge Wells Kent.TN12NJ. Our United Kingdom host is Mr Harold Brown, an Australian with a B & B specialising in small personal tours. Our twin share accommodation with en-suite includes breakfast each morning & the evening dinner, with wine & coffee. Lunch is not included in this tour. While in Tunbridge Wells evenings are free. Our Sunday evening arrival will enable us to meet one & other and prepare for Monday at the Royal School of Needlework, Hampton Court Palace.
Day 2 Monday – Sep 6th
Each day we establish our routine before we are driven to HamptonCourt for the start of our special 5-day stitching course with the Royal School of Needlework. We will be collected daily for the drive back to Tunbridge Wells. Lunch is available in the palace - not included in the price.
Day 3 Tuesday – Sep 7th
Similar to day 1, with extended time in Hampton Court or shopping in East Molesey. There is a wonderful quilting shop nearby.
Day 4 Wednesday – Sep 8th
Penshurst Place, home of Philip Sidney, Viscount de L’Isle. The family have links with Australia when they served as the Australian Governor General in the 1960’s. Lunch nearby. (Time permitting: Ightham Moat, National Trust.)
Day 5 Thursday – Sep 9th
Following breakfast we make our way to the RSN for our 3rd day of stitching. In spare time we can view the palace & grounds.
Day 6 Friday – Sep 10
Sissinghurst Castle in Kent, the creation of Vita Sackville-West and Sir Harold Nicholson. Lunch available in the grounds.
Day 7 Saturday - Sep 11
Knole the medieval childhood home of Vita Sackville-West (& time permitting, Chartwell, Winston Churchill’s residence.)
Day 8 Sunday – Sep 12
Canterbury Cathedral, a morning service with a delightful choir for those interested. There is a shop and a museum as well; afterwards we visit Leeds Castle for lunch and the afternoon to enjoy the ambience.
Day 9 Monday – Sep 13
Day 4 with the Royal School, again there is much to enjoy in Hampton Court, the palace is huge, gardens stunning, the meals especially the Tiltyard are delicious, plus there are many palace shops for souvenirs.
Day 10 Tuesday – Sep 14
Last day stitching with the RSN & enjoying retail therapy.
Day 11 Wednesday – Sep 15
9a.m. Departure for Durham, (good idea to bring a small, easy to carry bag for these few days, we can use it to post goodies home before we leave England.) it’s a lengthy drive; depending on traffic we aim for York where we can enjoy the York Minster: shop & museum before lunch. Continue on to Durham for early evening arrival.
Day 12 Thursday – Sep 16
Durham; spend the day with Tracy Franklin. Lunch nearby.
Day 13 Friday – Sep 17
Visit Durham Cathedral, St Cuthbert’s stole, local history places and museums, and relax before we select a place for dinner in the evening.
Day 14 Saturday - Sep 18
Durham to Tunbridge Wells, via Hardwick Hall. View their historical textiles. Lunch to break the return journey. Farewell dinner that evening.
Day 15 Sunday - Sep 19
Depart for Luçon where we will be met by Val Holmes or her husband Claude Vallin.
