TERMINOLOGY
AMATEUR
These may take the form of any of the above, with the difference that they
may never be offered for commercial sale. They are often made by fans for their own
pleasure. Some attract cult status and are keenly sort after by collectors -
"My Best Friend's Brother is a Cyberman".
ANTHOLOGY SERIES
A fiction television program where there is no connection between one story
or another, where each story is complete within itself. Such programs as
"The Twilight Zone", "Night Gallery" and "The Outer
Limits" are good examples.
DIRECT TO VIDEO
These may take the format of almost any of the above, with the difference
that they have not be screened on television or at the cinema - but released
direct to video or dvd, for purchase or video/dvd hire. BBV have release a large
number of these and include a number of series - "The Stranger", and
"Auton".
DOCUMENTARIES - FEATURES
These are non fiction programs which deal with aspects of fiction television
programs or cinema movies, such as "The Making of ....", or
"Behind the Scenes of .....", or "An interview with.....".
They may be one off programs, part of a series of documents or part of a
particular non fiction program - such as "Entertainment
Tonight". Examples include "Making of Aliens", "E.T.
and Friends".
MADE FOR TELEVISION MOVIES
A fiction television program (movie) which is complete in
itself, and was not made to be theatrically released through Cinemas. These
movies usually are made in such a way as to provide cliff hanger moments
throughout the presentation, prior to advertising breaks. These also include
movies made by editing together two or more episodes from series programs.
Movies such as "Gargoyles" and "I Dream of Jeannie - Fifteen
Years Later" are just a few.
PILOTS
A fiction television program (movie or episode format) which is complete
in itself, and was designed to be a forerunner for a television serial or/ series
etc. Some never get screened. Examples include "Genesis II", "The
Questor Tapes" and "Planet Earth".
SERIAL
A fiction television program where each episode is a continuation of the
previous episode, often with a "Cliff Hanger" at the end of each
episode. This is rare in science fiction programs, usually it is found in what
is referred to as soap operas such as "Days of Lives" or
"General Hospital". One such example is
"Danger Island".
MINI SERIALS
Usually referred to as Mini Series, these are fiction television programs
where each episode is a continuation of the previous episode, usually with
a "Cliff Hanger" at the end of each episode, but with a limited life,
usually between two (2) to six episodes. Good examples of mini serials come from
the Hallmark range and include "Jason and the Argonauts", .
SERIES
A fiction television program where, although there is a continuing theme or
link (such as characters, locations, etc), each episode
(usually) is complete in itself, with the viewer not having to have seen
previous episodes to get the idea of the current episode. This
is the most common type of science fiction program. Examples include
"Star Trek", "Bewitched", and "Blake's 7".
SERIAL - SERIES
A fiction television program which combines both aspects of Serial and
Series. Where a program is made of serial episodes, but for a limited
number of episodes, then following the series line, a new group of episodes,
which may have little connection to the previous group of episodes. Such
programs as "Rocky Jones Space Ranger" and "Doctor Who"
follow this format. "Doctor Who" has presented different stories about
the Doctor, from one (1) episode stories up to twelve (12) episode stories.
These are probably the least known types of programs in the realms of Science
Fiction television.
SPECIALS
A fiction television program, usually a one off, which may have some
connection to a movie or television program. Often these types of shows appear
around Christmas, as Christmas Specials". An example is the "Star Wars
Holiday Special".
