DOCTOR WHO
FAN PRODUCTIONS
Fan productions differ from spin-offs, such as "The
Stranger" series starring Colin Baker, in so much as they are recorded
(usually) as non-profit productions. As non-profit and limited distribution
they tend not to infringe copyright of original authors and creators, much the
way that fanzines are treated. On the other hand, spin-offs tend to avoid copyright infringements by
not using character names from the series, although, there is often an implied
connection, particularly when using many of the leading performers from the original
series, and of course, are produced as a commercial product (hopefully making a
profit).
Fan productions, tend to fall into two
categories - fiction and non fiction. Fiction stories often use familiar
characters and villains, while others introduce new characters and villains.
Non fiction productions often take the form of interviews with cast and crew or
recording segments from conventions.
There are a
few productions which recorded live stage performances, such as the Jon Pertwee
or Colin Baker "Ultimate Adventure". Although these are usually
recorded without consent of the actors or producers (usually poor quality
recordings), but they are often the only visual record of these
events. These fan productions are listed without any guarantee
as to their availability, or their quality - both audio/visual or
theatrical.
