OCEAN GIRL

Set in the near future, the young inhabitants of an underwater research colony discover Neri, a mysterious young girl from the ocean who has a special gift: the ability to telepathically communicate with a 40 tonne humpback whale companion. Also known as "Ocean Odyssey". An animated sequel "The New Adventures Of Ocean Girl" followed in 2000.
