STUDIED AT THE SYDNEY CONSERVATORIUM OF MUSIC WITH THE LATE SONJA HANKE,
GRADUATING WITH A BACHELOR OF MUSIC DEGREE WITH HIGH DISTINCTION.
AFTER WINNING NUMEROUS PIANO SCHOLARSHIPS AND COMPETITIONS, HE TRAVELLED
TO THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA WHERE HE COMPLETED A MASTER OF MUSIC
IN PIANO PERFORMANCEAT THE PRESTIGIOUS PEABODY IINSTITUTE, WHERE HE
WONTHE SCHOOL’S MEMORIAL AWARDFOR OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT. MAJOR
TEACHERS AT THIS TIME INCLUDED JULIAN MARTIN AND MARC DURAND, WHILIST
ALSO PARTICIPATING IN THE MASTER CLASSES OF LEON FLESIHER, VLADIMIR
FELTSMAN AND ANN SCHEIN. JERARD HAS ALSO PARTICIPATED IN MANY INTERNATIONAL
FESTIVALS INCLUDING ASPEN, CALGARY, BANFF AND ORFORD AND RECENTLY VISITED
THE JUILLIARD SCHOOL OF MUSIC IN NEW YORK, ATTENDING LESSONS AND DOCTORAL
SEMINARS.
IN AUSTRALIA, HE
HAS TAUGHT SUCCESSFULLY AT ALL LEVELS, WITH PAST POSTS INCLUDING PIANO
FACULTY OF THE NEWCASTLE CONSERVATORIUM AND THE AUSTRALIAN INSTITUTE
OF MUSIC.
RULES AND CONDITIONS FOR PIANO SECTIONS
1. All sections
are open to amateurs only. An amateur is a competitor who may earn an
income from professional musical performances, using the same type of
instrument as will be used in the competition. However, this and other
income from musical performances must not be the major part of the competitor’s
total earnings.
2. A competitor’s
age shall be taken as that at the closing date of the Eisteddfod entries.
For 2010, this is the 03rd May.
3. There must be
a minimum of three (3) competitors in each section. If this does not
occur, each competitor will receive an adjudication report only, and
no perpetual trophies will be awarded.
4. The Adjudicator’s
decision is final.
5. If the competitor
chooses not to play from memory, a commercial printed sheet music copy
or an authorised photocopy must be used in the performance.
6. Each competitor
in “own-choice” sections must provide a copy of his/her
selection for the Adjudicator. If this is a photocopy (either authorised
or unauthorised), or has been taken from the Internet, it will not be
returned.
7. Once the Official
Programme has been printed, competitors cannot change sections.
8. Competitors and
their parents / supporters may not approach the Adjudicator’s
table, nor speak to the Adjudicator. If these rules are ignored, the
competitor will be disqualified immediately.
9. Cheques and money
orders should be made payable to St. George Eisteddfod Inc.
Stamps will not be accepted as payment .
Cash must not be sent through the mail: this practice is illegal.
10. Where a time
limit is set for a performance, the competitor should not exceed it.
Should this happen, the Adjudicator has the right to ring the bell,
and thereby terminate the performance.
11. Competitors
in Championship sections must compete in at least three sections, one
of which is the Championship itself.
12. Championship
winners are not permitted to enter the same Championship for the next
two (2) years.
13. Persons who
have been taught or advised by the Adjudicator in the six (6) months
prior to the opening day of the Eisteddfod are ineligible.
14. Competitors may not appear in sections other than those nominated
on their original entry form, which is held by the Convener.
15. The entry form
must have the name, address and telephone number of the competitor’s
teacher.
16. The Committee
reserves the right to refuse any entry.
17. Each competitor
who enters more than one Section must perform a different piece in each
section, except finals of Championship, in which one own choice piece
is allowed.
18. The use of Video
recorders, standard cameras or mobile phone cameras in the performance
area is forbidden under the Copyright Act of Australia and the Child
Protection Act of NSW, and hence such use is illegal.
19. St. George Eisteddfod
Inc. accepts no responsibility for unauthorised copying of material
by entrants in “own-choice” sections.
Commercial printed sheet music provided for the Adjudicator’s
use will be returned. All other music will be retained and destroyed.

ADJUDICATED ON SUNDAY EVENING THE 08th OF AUGUST 2010 FROM
SIX FINALIST’S CHOSEN FROM THE CHAMPIONSHIP HEATS.
A PIECE PLAYED IN HEATS MAY BE REPEATED IN THE FINAL IF SO DESIRED.

AN AWARD OF FIFTY
DOLLARS WILL BE PAID TO EACH OF THE SIX

OPEN PIANO CHAMPIONSHIP

A short piece of moderate difficulty will be available for study for a
period
of 3 minutes before performance. Accuracy, Expression and Tempo is the
main criteria.

All competitors must realize their responsibilities regarding
laws under Australian
Copyright
Act, 1968
Where sheet music is used the following will apply
1: Competitor
and /or accompanist must use original copies of music or authorised photocopies
(where photocopies are used they must be accompanied by a letter from
the publisher or copyright
holder) Schools may use “AMCOS” stamped copies in accordance
with AMCOS agreement.
2: A photocopy
may be provided for the adjudicator but will be destroyed after
the event by the
Eisteddfod Committee.
3: Accompanists
& Copyright - A single copy of the accompaniment may be made
for use in a
performance such as in a Eisteddfod. It must be marked “ACCOMPANIST
COPY”. After the
performance, the copy of the accompaniment must be handed to the Eisteddfod
Committee and all these
copies will be sent to AMOC.
4: The St.
George Eisteddfod Inc will not be liable for any copyright infringement
relating to the
submissions of photocopies. Please Note, Competitors submit copies at
their own risk.
5: It is an infringement
of copyright laws to record performances using video or audio tape.
