PALLIATIVE CARE WEEK 2003

National Palliative Care Week was launched at the Canberra Centre on Tuesday 27 May 2003. Usually the preserve of fashion designers and bands the stage was occupied by PCA officials and others. Also launched was a new planning document, a design competition for a new symbol (not logo) for PCA, and a new ten-minute promotional video explaining palliative care, which was made locally.

PCA Chair Prof David Currow.

Carer "Maureen" who tells in the video of her positive experience with the ACT Home Based Palliative Care Service. I was privileged to be with Maureen and her family when husband Barry died. Some of their daughters use to baby-sit our children.

In the give-away bag at the launch was a brochure entitled "Palliative care practice and end of life decisions".

The brochuire quite clearly quotes the PCA "Position statement on euthanasia" and states -

"Palliative care practice does not include deliberate ending of life, even if this is requested by the patient".

It is good to see PCA taking this initiative. For too long the pro-euthanasia campaigners have been unfairly denigrating palliative care and dismissing its value.
