(Punica granatum/Pomegrante)

The Pomegranate is a hardy, deciduous small tree which is widely grown in the subtropics and tropics for it's fruit and ornamental beauty.

The fruit is large and has a unique “woody” look, while the flowers have a dazzling appeal with bright tones of red and orange.

High temperatures are essential during fruit development for a good flavour. Pomegranates prefer full sun and like long, hot summers.

It is very drought resistant but grows better with a good supply of water.

The fruit has many culinary purposes: the fruit flesh is full of tender, edible seeds that are easy to eat with a nutty flavour.

The flesh itself is juicy and used as a traditional garnish for Middle Eastern food while the juice can be used in soups, sauces or jellies.

Tara Valley produces two Pomegranates, the full size variety and dwarf, which grows to a compact 1m in height.
