THE BLUE TIER UNDER THREAT

I commenced preparing this site some 2 years ago and as an ordinary citizen  became increasingly concerned at the scale of clear felling of Tasmania's wet eucalypt forests.  Having done considerable research into the practice I feel compelled to make a small comment.  The Blue Tier has always been a scenic tourist destination.  With little regard for local communities Forestry Tasmania is to commence clear felling the area commencing this coming southern hemisphere summer.  There is also community outcry in the far South, the Leven Canyon (the Catherine Alexander report) area, Ben Lomond, and the well publicized Tarkine and Styx Valley and many more.

Already a very embarrassing clear felled forest confronts travelers on the Bass Highway between Deloraine and Devonport near Parramatta Creek.  The plan to clear fell the southern slopes of the Blue Tier down to the Tasman Highway near Pyengana (and beyond) will have similar consequences!

To this end, we have been pleased to donate our resources to the production of the Blue Tier Self Guided Walks brochure - See It- Save It!  The brochure was launched at Poimena on the Blue Tier on Sunday December 14th by Senator Bob Brown in front of a crowd of over 300 people.  Just a small run of 5,000 copies have been printed.  Already, they are destined for distribution around Australia.

If you would like a supply of the brochures please e-mail us and we will provide details.

BROCHURE WITHDRAWN BY FORESTRY TASMANIA DIRECTIVE

The Regional Forest Agreement might be a done deal between the State, Commonwealth and the industry.  Someone forgot to ask the people!

Send a note to the politicians!

After detailed talks with locals in the area, it is clear that the pleas for saving this area in it's natural state are not being recognized.  Hard to believe given the whole range of assets in the area making it an ideal tourist destination.

I remember when as a child we used to take family drives from Launceston to Scottsdale across the Sideling.  Sometimes we would go on to St Helen's.  When time permitted we took the beautiful drive down Lottah Road and on through Gould's Country beneath the Blue Tier.  It is one of those beautiful myrtle or mixed wet forest drives - a symbol of what is Tasmania!  The Sideling Range has now been largely clear felled.  The picture on the left is at the top of the Sideling.  Mt Barrow is in the distance with clear felling as far as the eye can see.  Never to be a wet forest again!

The Forestry industry doesn't seem to appreciate the value of maintaining these pristine forest drives in their natural state. .... more

When searching for "Blue Tier" using Yahoo, the following sites appear on just the first few pages of the results.  One wonders why the whole Blue Tier and the surrounding areas to Mt Victoria should be clear felled at all!
