SNOW EXPERIENCE

COURSE DESCRIPTION :

DURATION : ONE THEORY AND GEAR CHECK SESSION PLUS A 2 DAY WALK WITH AN OVERNIGHT CAMP-OUT.

Designed with the bushwalker and highland angler in mind, this course enables practice under supervised conditions of navigation, safety and survival skills that can be called upon when walking in Tasmanias higlands in times of bad weather.

The walk takes place in the Western Central Plateau vicinity with a specific itinerary chosen to suit weather and participant considerations on the day.

COURSE CONTENT OUTLINE :

In general, the course introduces the following in both theory and practical.

Clothing and equipment to suit cold, wet and windy conditions.
Food and cooking to suit cold, wet and windy conditions.
Route planning and navigation requirements to suit windy and low visibility conditions.
Walking on and in snow
Site selection and preparation for camping on snow.
Emergency Shelters.
The construction of snow shelters (subject to suitable conditions).
Minimal impact procedures.
Cold injury and dehydration.

Please refer to the enclosed CLOTHING AND EQUIPMENT LIST for what you will need to bring to the theory and gear check session. You will also be required to provide your own food on the walk.

This practical introduction to walking and overnight survival in Tasmanian snow conditions requires previous camping out experience along with sound and suitable clothing and equipment as a prerequistite for enrolment.
